Where is Bukit Lawang?
Bukit Lawang is a small riverside village located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It is one of the best places in the world to see wild Sumatran Orangutan in their natural habitat.

All treks take place inside the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park.
Will we see orangutans?
Seeing orangutans is very common during treks in Bukit Lawang, but they are wild animals so sightings can never be guaranteed. Your guide will track wildlife and do their best to locate animals while respecting their natural behaviour.
Many visitors also see monkeys, birds, and other rainforest wildlife.
How difficult is the jungle trek?
The trek is generally considered moderate difficulty.
Expect:
Jungle hills and uneven trails
Humid tropical conditions
Occasional steep sections
You do not need to be extremely fit, but a reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy the trek.
What should I bring for the trek?

Yes. Our experienced local guides know the rainforest well and prioritise safety at all times. Guides will also explain how to behave around wildlife to ensure both guests and animals remain safe.

Bukit Lawang can be visited year-round.
Drier months: June to September
Rainy season: October to January
Even during the rainy season trekking is still possible, although trails may be muddy.
How do I get to Bukit Lawang?
Most travelers reach Bukit Lawang from Medan, the main city in northern Sumatra.
Transport options include:

The journey usually takes 3–4 hours.
Do I need to book in advance?
During peak travel periods it is recommended to book at least a few days in advance to secure your preferred trekking dates.
